About a year ago, my friend Claire and I saw Jack Whitehall at the Hammersmith Apollo, marking the end of his At Large tour. Although we had already seen the show twice early 2017, the difference about the performance at Hammersmith was it was being filmed for a Netflix comedy special. I knew Netflix did these specials predominantly with American comedians (Chelsea Peretti’s One of The Greats is a brilliant one), but I didn’t realise there was such demand on a large public platform to showcase British comedy. So below are three British comedy specials that you can watch on Netflix now that I highly recommend.
Jack Whitehall: At Large
Having seen this show three times and in three separate venues, trust me, it’s worth the watch. In this special, Jack tells stories of the time he hosted the Royal Variety Performance, the time he was on Google maps and the time he was cut out of Frozen. Jack Whitehall also has two other comedy specials available on Netflix too and they are all just as camp, posh and theatrical as you would think.
Greg Davies: You Magnificent Beast
I have always wanted to see Greg Davies’ stand up ever since I saw him as the headmaster on The Inbetweeners. I had briefly seen his appearances on shows like 8 Out of 10 Cats and Live At The Apollo, but I hadn’t seen a full stand up set from him until his Netflix special titled You Magnificent Beast, something he was told by a person he met on the street. The show has an overarching theme about family that starts with a questionable relationship with a teddy bear but ends with a beautiful Welsh choir in honour of his dad’s passing.
Russell Howard: Recalibrate
Russell Howard was one of the first comedians I watched on tv through his show Russell Howard’s Good News which aired on the BBC. I’ve seen many of his stand ups live, including a tour early 2017 which has turned into his Netflix special Recalibrate. Again, there is the overarching theme of family in this special too where Russell reminisces on moments with his recently deceased grandparents as well as stories with his mum; who seem to have become quite the double act! Although the special was recorded in Bristol, part of me wishes it was recorded in the US, as Russell packs a lot of commentary on American politics and I would have LOVED to see what the reaction was. Especially in the heavily republican, pro-trump States.
I was inspired to write this post after seeing an excellent comedian called Daniel Sloss was going to have TWO Netflix specials coming out this summer titled Dark & Jigsaw. To be frank, I hadn’t really heard of him before this except from brief snippets on Twitter. I always thought he was an up and coming comedian but with credits like nine seasons in the West End, three seasons Off Broadway and touring across 28 countries around the globe, how have I not checked him out before? After his Netflix specials have aired, Daniel will be touring his brand new show X throughout the UK, including a run at the Soho Theatre in London, which I will definitely try to check out. See the tour dates below if he is performing at a venue near you!

Thanks for reading! Which comedians would you like to see have their own Netflix special? I would love to see more women and PoC have their own Netflix specials including Mo Gilligan, Roisin Conaty, Shappi Khorsandi and Francesca Martinez to name a few.
Until next time,
