Welcome To The UK takes place at a funfair, where migrants are sent to gain passage into the UK. They can buy tickets to get into the funfair, buy candy floss and watch out to not be fooled by the ringmaster. The play is a very tongue in cheek look at what it means to be a refugee in the UK and shines a light at just how the political system really works.
The entire piece is written in a strong satirical way, featuring caricature like characters that range from a Katie Hopkins-esque journalist spinning lies to an accordion playing Theresa May. But the play isn’t about them. The play is about the people who come to the UK looking for a better life. The play also shines a light on just how ridiculous and unfair the system is towards those people. The funfair metaphor of the piece continues throughout and while it appears to be fun on the outside, it is anything but with people having to wait months and months for their refugee statuses and ID badges.
Although the piece has a short run time, there’s such a big cast of characters that I wish we could have delved into their backstories a bit more. But, then, do we need to? This is a really great production by PSCHYEDelight and one that is needed, especially since we’re in the middle of the shit show that is Brexit.
Until next time,
