Pretty much what it says on the tin, a group of – labelled – “eco terrorists” attack the Environment Minister of Australia at a Fleetwood Mac concert after she announces plans to spend tax payers money blocking out the sun. David Finnigan’s play asks the audience how far they’re willing to go to fight for what they believe in through the power of comedy and 80s techno music.
The show is performed by an excellent 5 piece ensemble, but I have to say Felicity Ward really shines here as Gwen, the Environment Minister, delivering great comedic timing and dance moves. She works well with Kelly Paterniti, who plays her press officer Georgina, and the scenes revolving around the two of them are some of the funniest in the piece. I really liked how self aware the show was, with interjections from ‘Finig’ (a characterisation of the writer) delivering anecdotes of the trouble he faced trying to get a show made. Although some of it worked well (I particularly enjoyed the Shania Twain anecdote..), I felt like the majority of this was just filler and it detracted from the (albeit, fictional) storyline.
That being said, this is a really interesting play and there isn’t anything like it that I’ve ever seen before. See it for a great cast and for a reflection on where we could be heading in a few years time.
Until next time,
