It’s time for the big ‘uns! Time for my predictions on the big five categories at the Olivier Awards for the show specific awards and the best director category.
BEST NEW MUSICAL
- Dear Evan Hansen
- & Juliet
- Waitress
- Amelie The Musical
Like I’ve mentioned before, there’s been a real lack of new musicals in the West End over the last year. Is this because of lack of financial risk? Or do they all just know they don’t stand a chance against a big American homerunner? We’ll see…
BEST MUSICAL REVIVAL
- Evita
- Fiddler On The Roof
- Joseph
- Mary Poppins
Pretty standard, I don’t really recall any other massive revivals in the West End this year?
BEST PLAY
- The Son
- Fairview
- Fleabag
- Emilia
I’m clueless with this category, there was such a wealth of plays in the West End this year, I honestly think this will be the most surprising category.
BEST PLAY REVIVAL
- Death of a Salesman
- Present Laughter
- Cyrano De Bergerac
- Uncle Vanya
A really strong year for play revivals, I’m fairly confident about this one too. Maybe Jamie Lloyd’s production of Betrayal might edge it’s way onto this list, but I’m not sure how likely it is.
BEST DIRECTOR
- Marianne Elliott & Miranda Cromwell for Death Of A Salesman
- Matthew Warchus for Present Laughter
- Jamie Lloyd for Evita
- Michael Grief for Dear Evan Hansen
- Michael Longhurst for The Son
What I’ve noticed about the best director category over the last couple of years is that there is always at least one director nominated from each show category. The past couple of years the category with 2 best director nods is always best play. However, given the strength of the revivals this year, I think it’ll be a battle between directors in the play revival category. Although, I’m not entirely confident in this list, I think there will be some surprises. And I hope it means more women on the list!
What shows/directors do you hope will be nominated on Tuesday? Let me know!
Until next time,
